Keahanie May Tunkin is an artist within the Tjungu Palya art centre.

Keahanie has been learning and loving the Tjukuṟpa and painting her whole life, and it’s easy to understand why, with incredible ninti(smart) family members like Kay, Marita, Teresa and Kumanara (Jimmy) Baker.

On long car rides she loves explaining and singing the stories from the surrounding countryside (at least the parts that are public knowledge) as well as all your favourite pop songs from the 80’s and 90’s.

This artwork refers to the story for Kalaya (emu). The father emu hid all his children in the bush. He told the kipara (bush turkey man) that he had deliberately dropped his kids and then eaten them. He persuaded the kipara to do the same. The kipara only had one son. Ngaltutjara (poor thing!) When the kipara saw the emu chicks running around he was really angry. The kipara was throwing rocks at the kalaya. Where he chased him along throwing rocks a creek was formed. The kalaya was pikatjara (sick). The country where he was lying down vomiting is marked by a clay pan. Tjukurpa mulapa (this law is true).
