Ned Grant (1941) intertwines himself within the landscape, unable to separate. He is a manifestation of the enormity of place that is Spinifex Land. With all of its labyrinthine religion within the physical, the flora, the fauna, the manta (ground). He moves under it, through it, above it, encompassing all. Religion is everywhere, it is sung, it is danced by firelight and it resides in and drives Ned Grant to paint.
In this composition Ned has painted the site Tjuntalatjara, signified by the central rockhole in his work. He has weaved the various trees punu around the site. As he recites the story he slips between naming the tree species and the tools that he would make using the various tree types. The straight tree toward the boom of the work he identifies as kulata or spear its straightness identifying its use for spear making. Ned also mentions that Tjuntalatjara was a site where many children played, drinking from the central rockhole. He played here many times as a child and young boy. As children they hunted rabbit and tinka (goanna). Before Ned knew of westerners and the outside world he new of the invasive species that preceded westerners exploration into the remote deserts of Australia. Ned talks of coming into contact with new species rabbits, camels and pussy cats. Rabbits and pussycats became staple foods for many of the desert people that remained in Spinifex country.
