Explications pour cette œuvre :
Ned Grant (1941) intertwines himself within the landscape, unable to separate. He is a manifestation of the enormity of place that is Spinifex Land. With all of its labyrinthine religion within the physical, the flora, the fauna, the manta (ground). He moves under it, through it, above it, encompassing all. Religion is everywhere, it is sung, it is danced by firelight and it resides in and drives Ned Grant to paint.
In this composition Ned Grant has depicted a significant site called Wulpultjara, that lies between Tjuntjuntjara and the old site of Ooldea. A significant soakage that was relied upon by generations of Anangu across the deserts of Western and Southern Australia. Ned visited Wulpultjara when he was a young boy before contact on the way to Ooldea that had become a vital part of Australian railway infrustructure shiing the soakages purpose from a water source for the desert population to a resource to fuel the steam trains crossing the Nullabor plain.
Wulpultjara belongs to Kulay a powerful snake that lives in the rockhole at Wulpultjara. He is an immortal being characterised by his powers as a ngangkari (traditional healer). These healers are just as notorious for their feats of healing as they are their ability to harm or curse. Revered and feared Kulay resides in Wulpultjara, hiding underground. People are too afraid to drink from this place, in fear of what lives inside.
