I paint the Wanampi Tjukurpa, or Water snake Dreaming. This is a story from Piltati, near Nyapari (on the Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara {APY} Lands in the remote north-west of South Australia). There’s a special rockhole at Piltati where this creation story takes place. There’s two wati (men), brothers and their wives. There’s trickery and conflict, and the men change themselves into wanampi (water snakes). The story tells how the land was shaped and formed. It’s important that we hold our culture, our stories, our connection to country strong for malatja-malatja (future generations) – that’s why I make paintings.

.... Willy Muntjanti Martin (1950) est un homme âgé très respecté pour son autorité en terme de droit et de culture. Muntjantji est né à Pukatja sur les terres APY dans le nord-ouest de l’Australie, où il a été élevé par sa famille.
Comme jeune homme, il a travaillé sur les stations de moutons environnantes. Willy vit maintenant dans la communauté de Mimili, où il est un peintre engagé au centre d’art aux côtés de sa femme Judy Martin.
En 2017 il a été retenu pour le prestigieux Wynne Prize, à la Art Gallery of NSW, Sydney, NSW.
Ses œuvres figurent au sein des collections publiques de la Art Gallery of New South Wales et dans différents collections privées. ..
Willy Muntjanti Martin is a respected senior man of Law and Culture. Muntjantji was born in Pukatja on the APY Lands in remote north-‐western South Australia, where he was raised by his family and as a young man worked on surrounding sheep stations. Willy now lives in Mimili community, where he is a committed painter at the art centre alongside his wife Judy Martin. ....
